Bengaluru is one of India's fastest-growing cities. But its single international airport is struggling to keep up. The pressure on Kempegowda International Airport has pushed the Karnataka government to seriously plan a second airport for the city.
Why Bangalore Needs a Second Airport
Kempegowda International Airport handles tens of millions of passengers every year. It is now India's third busiest airport. With the IT industry booming and air travel demand rising every year, one airport is simply not enough for a city of this size.
For people living in south Bengaluru, the problem is even worse. Reaching the existing airport in Devanahalli takes anywhere between 90 minutes to two hours, depending on traffic. A second airport would fix this directly.
What CM Siddaramaiah Said
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah made the second airport an official government promise during the Karnataka Budget 2026-27 presentation. He told the assembly that Bengaluru's existing airport has become the country's third largest and that decongesting it is now a priority.
He announced that a full feasibility report will be prepared with technical guidance from the Airports Authority of India. His government has already released Rs 1,593 crore for the development of seven domestic airports across Karnataka, with Rs 200 crore set aside for this year alone.
What Deputy CM DK Shivakumar Said
Deputy CM DK Shivakumar has been the most vocal politician on this project. He has spoken publicly about the need for a 9,000-acre site for the new airport.
Shivakumar confirmed at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2025 that the project will come up in south Bengaluru. He said the Centre has assured its full support once the feasibility report is submitted. He has also pushed the Union government to ease height restriction norms around the shortlisted sites, which is currently one of the key technical roadblocks.
Second Airport in Bangalore Location
Three sites are currently shortlisted for the second airport in Bangalore. Two locations are along Kanakapura Road - near Kaggalipura and Harohalli. The third site is on Kunigal Road near Nelamangala.
All three sites have been visited and assessed by AAI officials. Harohalli and Kaggalipura fall in Ramanagara district, while the Nelamangala site falls in Bengaluru Rural district.
What the AAI Report Says
The Airports Authority of India completed a pre-feasibility study on all three sites. The report did not recommend any single location. Instead, it flagged challenges at each site including airspace management issues and difficult terrain.
The state government has now invited bids from consultancy firms to carry out a deeper feasibility study. This study will look at financial viability, expected passenger load, and connectivity options at each location.
The HAL Airport Question
Many Bengalureans have long demanded the reopening of the old HAL airport in Vimanapura. It is centrally located and already has existing infrastructure. But the government appears to have moved away from this idea.
HAL continues to operate as a defence and research facility. The civil aviation ministry is focused on a greenfield project rather than reviving the old airport. So the second airport will most likely be a brand new facility built from scratch.
Impact on Real Estate
Wherever the second airport comes up, the surrounding areas will see a massive real estate boom. This is exactly what happened when KIA was built in Devanahalli. North Bangalore transformed completely within a decade.
If the airport comes up in south Bengaluru, areas like Harohalli, Kanakapura Road, Bidadi, and Ramanagara district are expected to see a sharp rise in land prices and new development.
When Will It Be Ready
There is no confirmed timeline yet. The feasibility study is still being commissioned. After that, site finalization, environmental clearances, land acquisition, and construction will follow. Experts suggest the airport could realistically be operational sometime around 2032 if things move at a steady pace.
What This Means for Bangalore
A second airport is not just about handling more flights. It is about giving south Bengaluru the infrastructure it has long been denied. It is about reducing travel time, creating thousands of jobs, attracting new businesses, and making the city more liveable for the millions who call it home.
The political will is clearly there. The budget commitment is made. The site study is underway. Bangalore's second airport is no longer just a rumour - it is a project in motion.
